International review for spatial planning and sustainable development

For investigation regarding the impact of planning policy on spatial planning implementation, International Community of Spatial Planning and Sustainable Development (SPSD) seeks to learn from researchers in an integrated multidisciplinary platform that reflects a variety of perspectives—such as economic development, social equality, and ecological protection—with a view to achieving a sustainable urban form.

This international journal attempts to provide insights into the achievement of a sustainable urban form, through spatial planning and implementation; here, we focus on planning experiences at the levels of local cities and some metropolitan areas in the wolrd, particularly in Asian countries. Submission are expected from multidisciplinary viewpoints encompassing land-use patterns, housing development, transportation, green design, and agricultural and ecological systems.

Approaches for achieving sustainable urban form in Asian cities(Springer)

This book attempts to provide insights into the achievement of a sustainable urban form, through spatial planning and implementation; here, we focus on planning experiences at the levels of local cities and some metropolitan areas in Asian countries. This book investigates the impact of planning policy on spatial planning implementation, from multidisciplinary viewpoints encompassing land-use patterns, housing development, transportation, green design, and agricultural and ecological systems in the urbanization process. We seek to learn from researchers in an integrated multidisciplinary platform that reflects a variety of perspectives—such as economic development, social equality, and ecological protection—with a view to achieving a sustainable urban form.

Special Issue on: “Spatial Planning and Historical city"

Destruction of historical landscape and culture during rapid economic development is reaching worrying proportions in many Asian areas, where new urban redevelopment projects are implemented in urban downtown areas. A lesson gained from the urban development experience is that the aspect of urban conservation is a strategic opportunity for sustainable society, in a sense that it could be easier to gather all stakeholders concerned with community suitability in historic preservation areas since historical and cultural landscape are limited. In addition, the unbalance between the protection and development in historical cities awakes stakeholders when traditional communities are disappearing gradually. Urban conservation is a strategy for urban regeneration and community development in historic preservation areas.

This special issue focuses on spatial planning and historical conservation issues in Asian areas. The objective is to provide an insight on the experiences of planning policy and implementation for urban conservation from viewpoints of sustainable society.

The urban modeling work, which integrates constrained economic demand, land use development, transportation and environmental issues, is able to describe potential spatial urban growth processes. Using urban model, the spatial planning work proposed by local urban planning, land management, and environmental protection departments can be combined in the same platform to visualize possible spatial patterns of urban growth. We attempt to provide an insight on urban models to integrate spatial planning with different aspects of urban and social system in order to study the dynamic, interactive influences between different departments in local government such as economic, land use, transportation and environment.

In this issue, we have focused on how to apply urban models to aid local governments in investigating growth possibilities through urban modeling in planning practice rather than in model building and validation.

Environmental pollution during rapid economic development is reaching worrying proportions in China and other East Asian areas, where urbanization is progressing along with industrialization. Urban growth takes place at regional level and is advanced by domestic social and economic development policies, while land use and transportation system changes occur in a highly dynamic system that involves many forces such as economic development, population growth, and policy decisions. As a result, energy consumption grows and waste discharges increase. In addition, trans-boundary and global environmental pollution including greenhouse gas emissions and acid deposition become international problems in East Asia which should be investigated from multiple disciplines and perspectives. These include social, economic, internal law, urban planning and environmental engineering systems. This special issue focuses on urbanization and environmental issues in East Asian areas. The objective is to provide an insight on the co-benefit framework of urbanization and trans-boundary environmental pollution control from multidisciplinary viewpoints. Qualitative and quantitative, social science and engineering approach studies are encouraged.
